Common Names: Rhus tox., Rhus radicaris, American Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, Poison Vine
Family: Anacardiaceae

Description:

Rhus Toxicodendron, commonly known as Poison Ivy, is a well-known North American plant notorious for producing urushiol — an oily resin in its sap that causes itching, blistering rashes upon skin contact. Native to the United States and Canada, this plant can appear as:

  • A trailing vine (10–25 cm tall)

  • A shrub (up to 1.2 meters)

  • A climbing vine on trees or structures

The plant bears white to greenish-yellow flowers in June, followed by clusters of small berries.

Medicinal Uses:

Despite its toxic nature, Rhus Toxicodendron is a valuable remedy in homeopathy and herbal medicine. Fresh leaves are harvested and prepared for therapeutic use. It's especially effective in treating:

  • Skin conditions: Eczema, shingles, nappy rash, cold sores, chilblains, and other blistered, dry, or scaling skin problems with hot, burning sensations.
