Polygala amara is a low-growing perennial plant, reaching up to 0.2 meters (about 8 inches) in height. Each flower contains both male and female reproductive organs and is mainly pollinated by insects.

The plant grows well in:

  • Acidic, neutral, or alkaline soils (including very alkaline)

  • Moist, well-drained soils

  • Locations with partial shade (like light woodland) or even in full sun.

Polygala plants are also used as food by the larvae of some butterflies like the Large Grizzled Skipper.

Appearance:

The plant has shiny, fleshy, rounded leaves forming a small tuft at the base, with erect flowering stems growing up to 15 cm tall. It’s an easy-to-grow species, making it a charming addition to wild gardens and natural landscapes.
