Euphrasia Officinalis (Eyebright)

Plant Family: Scrophulariaceae
Common Names: Eyebright, Red Eyebright, Augentrost, Euphrasy, Meadow Eyebright

Historical Background:

The name Euphrasia originates from Euphrosyne, one of the Three Graces in Greek mythology, symbolizing joy and mirth. Although known to the ancient Greeks, its medicinal use was only documented from the 14th century onwards, especially for eye-related ailments, giving it the name Eyebright.

Parts Used:

The entire aerial part of the plant is used for medicinal preparations.

Plant Constituents:

Eyebright contains:

  • Iridoid glycosides (notably aucubin and its aglycone aucubigenin)

  • Flavonoids (such as quercetin and apigenin)

  • Tannins

  • Volatile oils

  • Resins

  • Mannite

  • Vitamins: A, B-complex, C, D, and E

  • Minerals: Sulfur, Potassium, Iron, Silicon, trace Iodine, Copper, and Zinc

Pharmacological Properties:

Anti-inflammatory:
Aucubin has demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory action in animal studies, comparable to standard anti-inflammatory drugs like indomethacin. In vitro studies suggest it inhibits thromboxane-synthase enzymes, helping reduce inflammation.

Antimicrobial:
Aucubigenin has shown antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis, and Bacillus subtilis. It also displays antifungal effects against Candida albicans and Penicillium italicum, along with anti-hepatitis B virus properties.

Hepatoprotective:
Aucubigenin can inhibit hepatic RNA polymerase and protein synthesis, offering protection against liver toxins like carbon tetrachloride and alpha-amanitin.

Therapeutic Uses:

  • Anti-catarrhal: Helps alleviate inflammation and mucus discharge from the eyes and respiratory tract.

  • Anti-inflammatory: Reduces redness, swelling, and irritation.

  • Astringent: Contracts tissues, reducing secretions.

  • Stimulant: Enhances liver function and supports detoxification.

  • Mild Tonic: Strengthens the body's systems, providing a sense of well-being.

Specific Indications:

  • Eye diseases: Conjunctivitis, eye strain, and eye inflammation

  • Allergic reactions: Hay fever, early measles with eye involvement

  • Headaches, menstrual irregularities, prostate inflammation

  • Effective against colds producing ocular symptoms

General Symptom Patterns:
Worsens in the evening, warm or windy weather, and indoors. Improves in subdued lighting, with cold applications, or by drinking coffee.

In Electrohomeopathy (E.H.):
Dr. Mattei considered it invaluable for treating eye conditions, incorporating it in the Scrofoloso No. 12 (Marina) remedy.

Modern Insights:

Eyebright strengthens eye tissues, enhances nerve elasticity and resilience in the optic system, and promotes overall ocular health.
