Spigelia Anthelmia

Synonym: Anthelmia quadriphylla
Common Names: Pinkroot, Wormbush, Indian Pink, Worm Grass, Demerara Pinkroot, Kromantikankan

Family: Loganiaceae

Description:

Spigelia anthelmia, popularly known as Wormbush or Pinkroot, is a tropical annual herb found in places like Suriname, Brazil, Mexico, and Central America. It typically grows up to 1 foot tall and has slender, unbranched stems. Its leaves are feather-lobed and arranged in a whorl around the stem.

The plant produces slender spikes of small, purple flowers, which interestingly open only in the afternoon. These flowers grow on one side of the spike. Its fruit is a tiny 2-lobed capsule containing warty seeds.

Note: The plant is highly poisonous due to the presence of an alkaloid called Spigeline, which primarily affects the heart — especially the heart's inner lining (endocardium) — and can cause debilitation in large doses. Its roots possess acro-narcotic properties, meaning they have both narcotic and irritant effects.

Medicinal Uses:

Despite its toxicity, Spigelia anthelmia has a long history of medicinal use, especially in traditional systems like homeopathy. Some of its key applications include:

  • Heart Conditions: Considered highly valuable in cases of pericarditis (inflammation of the membrane around the heart) and other heart ailments.

  • Nervous System Afflictions: It has a marked effect on the eyes, heart, and nervous system, often used for severe neuralgia, especially involving the fifth cranial nerve.

  • Worm Infestations: Traditionally known as a potent vermifuge (anti-worm medicine), especially in children suffering from intestinal worms.

  • Pain & Sensitivity: Used in treating conditions with stabbing, stitching pains, and heightened sensitivity to touch.

  • Other Applications: Prescribed for cases of rheumatism, anemia, scrofula (a form of tuberculosis), and for children who complain of abdominal pain centered around the navel due to worms.

Historical Note: The famous Dr. Mattei included it in his formulation Vermifugo No. 2, a herbal remedy against intestinal worms.

Caution:

Due to its toxic nature, Spigelia anthelmia should only be used under expert supervision, particularly in herbal or homeopathic preparations.
